To kick off the day’s events, Rice explained the role of the School Board and how it works with business and community groups to ensure the success of the school district. He also reminded students about the business leaders they would meet during the session and how their roles contribute to the success of our community. told students that “the more you know about the community, the better prepared you are to serve your community; and we need good, bright students like yourselves to take the lead someday.”Following the introductory period, the leadership team began its tour of area businesses by stopping at Whole Foods Market in Sugar Land to meet with Consuelo Haller, Director of Marketing. Haller explained her role as marketing director and shared the history of Whole Foods from its beginnings with only one small store to its current global market of more than 300 stores. Haller also led the group on a tour of the facility, pointing out signage that highlighted the stores core values.

After their visit to Whole Foods, the group met with Jeff Wiley, President of the Greater Fort Bend Economic Development Council. Wiley gave students an overview of the economic development of the City of Sugar Land, including plans for future development to accommodate population and job growth.Former City of Sugar Land Mayor and current business owner, David Wallace, also spoke to students on “Decisions You Make Today and the Impact They Have on Your Future.” He encouraged students to become involved in their city’s Mayor’s Youth Advisory Committee to learn about the community and expose themselves to career opportunities. He was delighted to learn that some of the leadership students were already involved on the committee.During the seminar, students also met with Brandy Leonhardt, Fiscal and Program Director of Fort Bend CORPS; and Kathy Renfrow, Director of Volunteer Fort Bend. Both spoke of the importance of serving the community and challenged students to become involved in community service projects.Concluding their day-long session was Dr. John Frossard, consultant and former FBISD Chief Academic Officer. He shared with students 25 lessons on “How to Achieve Unwavering Leadership.” Frossard reminded students that, “you don’t have to be big and powerful to make a difference. Trust yourself and the work that you have done, and remember that everyone can be the best at something.”

“The FBISD Student Leadership Program has been a great experience for me,” said Timi Koyejo of Clements High School. “I’ve learned so much about the community, its leaders, and how one person can make a big impact in the world. The knowledge I’ve gained has really helped guide me in making decisions about my plans for the future.”
